DimDim Open Source That Works

Some of my best finds have come from readers; today’s post is one of those. I heard about DimDim from a comment left by Bernie. DimDim is a pretty exceptional application providing whiteboard, desktop sharing, and presentation sharing. Some of the more important features are:

  • Sessions can easily be recorded for future playback
  • The application was built by a village– over one thousand users helped to define the product feature set
  • Single click sharing of whiteboard, desktop, or presentation
  • Free Teleconferencing
  • No software/client downloads
  • Secure meeting environment through shared meeting keys
  • Free Open Source version
  • Cross platform
  • Import MS PowerPoint ppt or pdf for presentation sharing

DimDim’s UI is clean snappy and easy to navigate. The left frame contains the meeting management controls, center is the working area, and the right frame provides a list of attendees and a chat interface. With a click of the mouse you switch to full screen mode.

The test imports I performed from PowerPoint looked great. The formatting converted correctly and best of all it only took a few seconds.

For power business users DimDim offers a Pro version of the service:

  • Dimdim Pro lets you customize your meeting room with your own branding, logos, and start and ending pages.
  • You can scale your Dimdim Pro room up to 100 participants

$99 a year gets you a single user license which supports meetings up to 20 participants. That’s not enough juice for you, there are also Enterprise rates.

I really like this application. It is without a doubt the nicest I have plaid with so far, and will become my primary shared presentation host.
