A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words With Evernote

After about a week with Evernote Beta I can tell you it is one amazing technology. There are numerous note taking and clipping applications out there, but none of them are able to extract text from photos like Evernote. Snap a picture of a business card, menu, or show schedule and upload it to Everlink– a few seconds latter the text within the image is searchable. Big words, little words, it doesn’t matter; this thing is amazing!

One of the most annoying things about Evernote’s competitors is the limited UI support.  With Evernote you can work in Windows, OS X, from your cell phone, or the Web. This is the way note taking should be. I want my data available all the time, from any computer.

The OS X Spotlight integration is great. Enter text found within documents or images and Spotlight will find it.  Try that with Yojimbo or SOHO Notes.

As much as I love what they have done so far, there are area’s I would like to see improved:

  •  One of the things I really love about Yojimbo is the ability to encrypt notes. I use this feature all the time to store login information to all the various web accounts I have.
  • There should be a way to rotate the images within the application.
  • The UI needs a way to zoom in on images. Trying to read large document captures (Menu’s, Schedule’s, etc) in the default size can be extremely difficult.
  • Should support OS X Services.
  • Allow users to select from previously entered tags in a drop-down.
  • One hundred MB’s of storage is very limiting. If this is to become my primary capture tool, the storage space needs to be increased drastically. Anything less than a gigabyte is kind of a joke now days. Oh, an by the way-I don’t want to pay a premium price for it.

This is only beta software, so I am sure what I am seeing is only the beginning of good things to come. Great job Evernote team!
