SecondGear’s Today– Not Ready for GTD Prime Time

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Today, the event and task manager by SecondGear; a work in progress. A couple of folks recently recommended that I take a look at this application, so I decided to kick the tires and check under the hood. First reaction was quite positive. The interface was fairly clean, and it appeared to be functional; second glance wasn’t so favorable.

I would not be quite as critical if SecondGear were providing the application for free, at least until it was fully functional; this is not the case. They are charging $15 for an application that has a long way to go. The product is simply missing basic functionality:

  • When double clicking on a task it should bring up the details of the task; either in iCal or in the native interface.
  • When creating events, the number of available fields are extremely limited. At the minimum, users should have access to all the fields available in iCal.
  • The UI is oversized and does not have a configurable parameter to adjust it.
  • Task creation is no better than in iCal. There is no support for GTD (projects and contexts)
  • No configuration for alarms
  • No support for alarms during event creation
  • No free time display
  • No current time display

This thing makes Microsoft Office 2008 “My Day” look like a million bucks, and that takes a lot. Again, I would be much less critical if SecondGear didn’t have the audacity to charge fifteen bucks for this thing. What is really strange is that this is the same company the created PocketTeets, which seems to have a very strong following.

My recommendation, don’t waste your money, at least until they finish the product.
